To replace worn leaf springs on an RV trailer, follow these steps provided by Axle Inc. technicians:
- Preparation: Park the trailer on a level surface and securely chock the wheels to prevent any movement.
- Lifting the Trailer: Use hydraulic jacks rated for the trailer’s weight. Place the jacks under the frame near the axle, never under the axle itself. Lift the trailer approximately 12 inches and support it with appropriately rated jack stands.
- Removal: Use a socket wrench to loosen and remove the U-bolts that clamp the assembly to the axle. Proceed to unbolt the shackles and hangers to free the old leaf spring. This is also an ideal time to inspect the equalizer and bushings for wear.
- Installation: Select a compatible replacement spring that matches your axle capacity (such as a 5-leaf spring for 3,000 lb axles). Position the new spring, aligning the eyes with the shackles.
- Securing the System: Reinstall the U-bolts and torque all bolts to 45-55 ft-lbs using a calibrated torque wrench. Gradually lower the trailer back to the ground.
Safety is critical during this process; always wear eye protection and gloves, and double-check all connections before towing.
